Fatty Liver: What Is It? Do You Have It? How To Fix It. | NAFLD

Did you know your liver can get fat? In fact, it's a common problem for those who carry a lot of belly fat, drink a lot of soda, and eat a poor diet.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is defined as the accumulation of fat in the liver that is not caused by drinking alcohol. It is considered the most common liver disease in western societies and is closely linked to insulin resistance, which is a common barrier to weight loss.

In this video, you'll learn
*How a fatty liver forms
*How to tell if you have a fatty liver
*What it means to your ability to lose weight
*How to reverse it before it's too late

Since your liver is involved in the metabolism of the foods you eat, you want your liver to be healthy and responsive. I share diet, exercise, and supplement tips for better liver function.

  • Rach Kate says:

Eating too often and overloading the pancreas with insulin being pumped out too often (fat storage mode) also causes it.
I had it for 3 years, went strict keto, still no change.
I added 2 months of IF and liver enzymes completely normalized.
When you get a liver ultrasound, get it with elastography which shows more detail.
    Dandelion tea is also beneficial.

    • Rach Kate says:

      Intermittent fasting.

    • Joanne Davis says:

Rach Kate so you do not have fatty liver now after taking liver enzymes and IF? If so how long was recovery?

    • Margaret Soper says:

Do you use a specific brand of dandelion tea, or do you make it from dandelions?

    • Kenneth Woolard says:

Loose weight and loose fatty liver. Read up on insulin resistance too! The more you learn the more you will help yourself. Keep watching videos! I reversed my type 2 diabetes. Diabetic drugs make this condition worse!

  • R Kenton says:

Thank you, Dr. Becky. One trait of a good teacher is the ability to take a complex topic and make it easily understood. You always do this for me, and I appreciate your videos very much. Thanks again!

  • Brad Steele says:

As usual, on point and informative. Thank you for breaking down an otherwise misunderstood and confusing topic. Just ordered the Berberine from your site. I can’t wait to give it a try.

  • 낭만고양이 says:

In January, my AST was 53 and my ALT was 139. Since I never drink, I think it’s because of the carbs that I had been eating. After 3 months of keto diet, it became 16 and 24. My doctor was so surprised and asked me how it became normal so quickly.

    • bahe1972 says:

낭만고양이 Doctor, ‘How did you ever get your labs back to normal without those awesome drugs the drug reps keep telling me about?! What, they cause side effects?? Well, I’ll just give you more drugs for the side effects of the drugs you’re already taking!’
      Allopathic medicine is a joke

    • Silvia Ruiz says:

But isnt keto high fats? Which says you shouldnt eat fats with fatty liverm

    • Cesar Hernandez says:

      What is AST and ALT?

    • netflix says:

      @Silvia Ruiz
Fatty liver is dietary sugar/carb problem, not dietary fat problem.

    • netflix says:

      @Cesar Hernandez
Ast & alt are liver enzymes. The ratio detect liver damage.

  • Raechelle Bennett says:

Thank you so much! This was very helpful. I’ve listened to many doctors on YT regarding fatty liver and you give such a simple explanation/solution to getting this condition under control. Well done! 👍

  • Phyllis Wing says:

Your explanation was concise and very clear. The overall message was to adopt a low carbohydrate diet. I got it, thanks! I’ll work on it.

  • Jeepergirl says:

Thank you, Dr. Becky this was more information than I ever received from my primary doctor! Not one doctor explained anything about fatty liver disease, like what causes it and what foods to stay away from or what can be done? Great information and advice. Thank you again for getting this important message out.

  • J U says:

Good grief. I can’t believe how much I am learning through these YouTube videos! If my doctor(s) don’t know or want to tell me and others how to eliminate their fatty liver, they should just direct everyone to YouTube videos like these! Thank you!

    • songbird857 says:

      Joy Underwood Ditto. 👏👏👏

    • Claudia Goodman says:

You are so right. I have been told by my gastro i have fatty after some texts and blood tests. She told me “to focus on loosing weight and go back in 6 months and possibly have a biopsy if I still have it” that is all…

    • Terje Oseberg says:

Doctors don’t know anything about nutrition. All they know about pharmaceutical drugs from the drug companies. It actually turns out that fatty liver disease is caused by gaining too much weight in combination with a body that is unable to create more fat cells. If you can’t make more fat cells, your fat cells become full, and then refuse to absorb more fat. Then, if you continue to consume too much food, your body will begin to store the excess calories as fat everywhere on your body that it can (which, because your fat cells are full, is not where it’s supposed to be stored).

    • arif ali says:

Joy Underwood Doctors won’t do that. They’ll lose business if they do!

    • Michelle Prud’homme says:

Terje Oseberg I agree! I have been a nurse for 26 years and most doctors do very little nutritional counseling and the ones that do are based on the old model of eat 6 to 8 small meals a day, eat lots of bananas and protein shakes to lose weight. All the stuff we are finding out is hurting our liver. Dr. Berg is cutting edge and his patients are having true life results, and reversal Of insulin resistance and fatty liver conditions . Not many doctors are having results with their patients like he is.

  • william noble says:

Yesterday I went to see the diabetic nurse after my last blood test results, and omg she said my blood results after starting Keto were fantastic that she has taken me off my medication for diabetes,so I’m now in remission,I’m so happy, thanks to the four people I followed on YouTube, Becky, Dr Berg,Butter Bob and Keto Christina. Thankyou for all the fantastic support, you are all inspirational….

    • Dr. Becky Gillaspy says:

Great news, William! Congratulations on taking control of your health!

    • Timothy Hand says:

Keep up the great work @William nobel. I have lost over 30 lbs since starting on 9/23/2019. I feel fantastic. It almost feels like I have found the fountain of youth.

    • Barbara Mowrey says:

william noble I was out of control with diabetes for 13 years while following the ADA recommendations until listening to Dr. Richard Bernstein. He has a book on Amazon called the diabetes solution. He does tele- seminars every month and he invented the basil bolus insulin method and gave us our first diabetic meters. He is 85 years old this year and is fantastic. I am so thankful that I met this man over YouTube! My blood sugars are under control for the first time in 13 years and my complications are starting to dissipate. My BMI is at 19 and I exercise on the total gym every day. I look better at 69 years old and I have most of my life. Hope you get a chance to see one of his videos or listen to one of his tele seminars. Wonderful news!

    • لو. استارز says:

today is the day six after boycotting bread and rice , and I just can not describe how bright and light as feather I feel. it almost remind me the first days of RAMADAN and the the creative and sharp mind and mentality that one feels during those days of that holy month. May Allah bless you more and more and all THE FORCES OF GOOD, the health youtubers.

  • Steven Michael says:

Thank you Dr Becky! Very informative and articulate. By the way I had an ultrasound and blood tests which showed early stages of NAFLD. One specialist said if it advances to liver cancer we can give you some medication. Got a 2nd opinion from another specialist and he said there’s nothing wrong with you. Both never talked about diet and reversing the issue. I’m sick & tired of these so called specialists and I certainly won’t be going back to either of them.

    • litestreamer says:

It’s because allopathic doctors receive little to no nutritional training in school, and don’t bother to learn holistic nutrition their own.

  • Benjamin Nielsen says:

This was very informative. I am a skinny-fat male, struggling with belly fat that is just always… there. I had a blood test done prior to starting a 30-day carnivore diet last September and my doctor informed me that I had fatty-liver…. probably caused by 30 years of eating wheats, breads, grains, glutens, sugars, high fructose corn syrup, and other processed crap. After my experiment, I did post blood work and the results were drastically better. My doctor was amazed and even said she had never seen such positive lab work results with any of her male patients my age. I am still working to reduce the fatty liver, day by day. I’m doing 16 hours fasts, with two meals, and also drinking apple cider vinegar. It works. Thanks for this video.

    • Doris Mamo says:

Good for you! Have you lost any weight?

    • Flipturns says:

Be sure to include excercise in your daily health routine also. Excercising increases HDL, which is the good cholesterol that protects your arteries and excercise helps lower the LDL and VLDL bad cholesterol types.

    • callmedeno says:

      @Benjamin Nielsen

So are you young, old, or middle aged?

    • Benjamin Nielsen says:

@callmedeno middle aged. Sitting at 41

    • Benjamin Nielsen says:

@Doris Mamo actually lately I’ve gained weight. I found myself eating loads of crap again. Feeling sick feeling fat feeling tired again. Of course 2020 hasn’t been the best year. Trying to get back on carnivore.

  • David Maisel says:

Just got diagnosed with fatty liver disease. My doctors are sympathetic but not very helpful when it comes down to what to do about it. My insulin resistance is going up too. My daughter has type 1 diabetes so allot of what you are saying makes solid medical sense!
Thank you for showing medical group studies and avoiding platitudes. Just subscribed and will be sharing ❤

    • Kaitlyn says:

Hey same boat. Though I added carrying 5 kids and the weight gain that entails. My oldest is a type 1 diabetic, so its interesting going from all i know about how carbs effect our bodies, so i “nutritionist ” for type 2 diabetics and being told to eat like 175gm of carbs a day ( somewhere around 16 pieces of bread worth of carbs a day). That’s insane.
It sucks cause I have been skinny my whole life til now, add in fatty liver, a new type 2 diagnosis, and no free time, it feels overwhelming. I’m not a pop, juice, alcohol drinker so its other stuff.
I know what I need to do, I’ve been eying up keto for over a year, I’d love to do it with my family as much as possible, but I’m in canada and the cost of feeding a 7 person family would probably make your head spin! Lol gotta get my butt in gear before my kids end up without a mom.

    • David Maisel says:

@Kaitlyn I share your frustration! We live in Brazil and the nutritionists here as well as endocrinologists are in denial about carbs due to the national diet being beef beans and rice.
Its really hard for me to practice what I preach to my own daughter but it’s the carbs!
It should be a bit easier for us given we got kids with type 1.
Best of luck and don’t give up!

  • Daran says:

Doctor Becky once more thank you for explaining this problem so simple and clear.

  • joy jeffery says:

Thank you for helping me understand fatty liver! My mother was diagnosed with Cirrhosis of the liver about 6 years ago. None of us understood how this happened and what caused it. The disease took her life about 3 years ago. This is the very first time I have understood what the symptoms are and what lead to the cause. We had great doctors and great medical help for the last years of her life. Unfortunately, we saw the suffering effects of this disease. You described her diet, weight issues and stress exactly. I am so glad I found your knowledge, education and help with my own healthy eating life. I am passing your info on to all! Blessings.

  • KiltedCrumpet says:

I take roasted dandelion tea, ACV, milk thistle, and tudca everyday. Low carb too. Breads & potatoes were my weakness. I’m thrilled to see my eyes returning to a bright clear white again. Next ultrasound I expect a clear liver report! Thank you Dr Becky, love your videos ♡

  • Jennifer L Turner says:

I was just diagnosed with Non Alcohol Fatty Liver Disease last week and my husband and I had already decided to start a Keto diet for weight loss and to lower inflammation. I am also going to fast through breakfast. Thank you for this helpful information! Glad I found your channel!

  • D LG says:

Two words: intermittent fasting. I fast for a minimum of 17 hrs everyday and eat 2 meals (1 large and 1 small) in the remaining 6-7 hrs of the day…and no snacking. This has definitely improved my liver health and a bunch of other things, including blood pressure, weight management, sleep, regularity, energy levels, etc. Routine fasting is by far the best thing I’ve ever done for my health. In addition to eating better foods, people should try fasting!

    • Benjamin Nielsen says:

It works. It really does. When I fast after 2pm, I feel better. I sleep better. I’m not bloated. My nightly acid-reflux and heartburn goes away, And I’m not having crazy shits anymore. I just need to get exercise back in the routine.

    • Mike Miller says:

@Benjamin Nielsen It works because that’s how the human body has evolved over millions of years. As gather hunters we often only ate when we were able to find food via hunting, fruits, fishing, etc. So we often went all day and sometimes several days without eating and therefore, our digestive systems had the proper rest. Hence, intermittent fasting.

    • Charles McGehee says:

Very good information to spread. People fear fasting but intermittent fasting is very much easier and effective too. Great comment and 100% accurate. Fasting is so good for a damaged liver. And it help our taste buds crave healthier food’s.

    • Stephen Wright says:

@Benjamin Nielsen I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for a little over a month. Since I’m only eating 2 times a day something clicked in my head that said I really need to make these meals count and be nutritious to my body. Funny how cutting out one meal changed my whole perspective.

    • Benjamin Nielsen says:

@Stephen Wright yup. It does change things doesn’t it. I am actually starting to lean towards one meal a day. It seems hard but when I do that, I actually feel pretty good. Its strange. But as far as meals go, I think I tend to eat too much in one sitting. But I’m working on it. Best of luck with yours.

  • elaine says:

I am a heavy drinker and my liver scan read 331 out of 400 for fatty liver. Luckily no scarring or anything else. I don’t smoke or do drugs, i walk every day but the alcohol has caught up with me. Time to make a change! Thanks so much Becky for your amazing videos and your 2 fit Docs channel too. I appreciate you both.

  • Steve C says:

July 2020, a CT scan showed I had a severe fatty liver. After a year on keto, a CT scan in July of 2021 showed the fatty liver was gone. It was likely gone well before a year but that was when I had a CT scan scheduled that confirmed it was gone and there’s nothing like having that kind of confirmation.

    • James W says:

      Congrats!

    • Jay M says:

Congrats, I was diagnosed recently with severe fatty liver and I’m looking into keto. Any tips to advice that helped you? Foods you consumed and stayed away from? Thanks in advanced!
