coming from a food scientist who also struggles with BED/depression/anxiety I really love the “geeking out” of your nutrition fact checking
Yesss I’m glad you agree
BED ~ Bachelor of Education?
This makes so much sense to me! I had a systemic yeast infection after taking antibiotics and during/after treatment, I experienced way more satiety and stopped craving sugar! I also had so much more energy. I’m excited about focussing on a healthy gut as part of becoming healthier and stronger.
It’s so so important
This explains so much why two people can make the same changes but only one loses weight. I’d love more videos like this about these gut bacteria and how to try yo tip the scale (pun intended) into the calorie burning ones!
Yes!!
I used to eat a lot of higher fiber foods, but then I got a colostomy and it feels like everything that promotes gut health gives me the runs hardcore. I know people with ostomies are a very small niche, so not expecting a full video, but maybe if you could drop those of us who have them a hint or two in reply to these comments I know I would appreciate it and I bet some of my fellow ostomites would too
For sure
hello fellow ostomate.
hello fellow ostomates!! 😊
yes yes this!!!!!!!!!
Had an ileostomy and now I have a J pouch and no colon at all. WOULD LOVE to see a video on how missing all of your large effects all this!!!
I was thinking of buying probiotics just for better health, but a lot of the boxes I see in stores has a strain which apparently causes weight gain. Is it rare for that to happen and should I just buy them? Because I really don’t want to gain weight 😂
Loved this – thanks. I’m very gluten intolerant and so when I want bread type things Im often stuck with corn-made products, which I don’t think are anywhere near as high in fibre as wholegrain breads. I try to get insoluble and soluble fibre elsewhere – I eat lots of fruit, veg, legumes and oats or brown rice etc but I’m curious about if there’s more I could do. I suppose it would just be really cool to hear advice specifically for gluten intolerant or celiac folks if there are enough of us out there who’d be interested.
Legumes, chia seeds, flax seeds are all great fibre sources that are gluten-free
@Abbey Sharp having all of those. Thanks
Definitely interested in more on this topic too! I remember realizing that gf products aren’t fortified like wheat products and it was a huge epiphany moment for me.
A lot of elderly people find it hard to keep their weight up – could you do one for how to stay healthily fed with a very small appetite?
Yes pls! With a few healthy meal options that would be awesome!
She has a video on this! It is a great one, I still implement a lot of the tips from it.
This was a really informative video and ties into a concern I have. I suffer from Sensory Food Aversion which makes it very very difficult for me to eat certain foods: I can’t eat any fruit and most vegetables without it triggering my gag reflex. Lately I’ve been working on improving my diet with a Dietician but getting more fiber is difficult. I already eat lots of whole grains, and beans are one of the few veggies I can stomach but it’s really difficult to get other diverse sources of fiber in my diet in large enough portions. Not sure if you might have some advice or reassurance on this topic.
Also if you ever wanted to do a video about managing a nutritious diet while struggling with food aversion that would be an amazing topic to discuss. I don’t see anyone ever talking about it.
Just an idea- how is your gag reflex for swallowing pills? A pill fiber supplement could help a little bit. Also have you tried lentils?
@Audrey Bringgold I can handle pills okay so a fiber supplement is probably not a bad idea, I had just heard it isn’t as good as getting it from whole food sources. And I was actually just looking at lentil recipes! I’ve never tried them before but it sounds like a texture I could handle that would be worth the try. Thank you for the helpful reply
I think fibre from supplements is better than no fibre (if your doctor also agrees). You can use it as an intermediate step.
Fiber rocks and I am more than happy to share my calories with my little friends . However even though calorie counting is not an exact science I still find tracking and measuring and weighing out portions very useful !
Timing perfect again. I’ve been having issues with eating and weight for a decade and I know fiber this that, but never prioritised it that much. I’ve been adding more fiber plus vitamins to my diet for like the last three weeks and suddenly have a flatter stomach, linking to your previous video about bloating…. It was gone. And I feel so much better. It’s stark.
I totally need more gut health videos, this one was very helpful ❤️❤️❤️
Abbey. I am struggling with bulimia now more than ever. Im not sure what recovery looks like for someone like me. Ive always had it mentally engraved that recovery is not possible because my ED isnt real compared to anorexia. What does recovery look like for someone with bulimia who also needs to lose weight?
Yes Abbey! Please do more gut health videos! Thank you for this one. Love it when you “geek out”! ❤️
Following the comment trend on how to make this work when you have dietary restrictions – would be very grateful for a vid on maximising gut health whilst dealing with IBS/eating low fodmap <3
Abbey, I’m truly thankful for all the hard work you and your team do to make videos like this. Thank you ❤
That video came just at the right time. I lost a good amount of weight following the Weight Watchers program for a while now, and I always wondered why a banana has zero points and cookies with the same amount of calories have a lot of points. You are kind of directed towards chosing the banana over the cookie. So it fits your explanation. Thank you!
the medical system here in Iran is way more advanced than most countries, and it has been a known fact for many many years that this is true. That’s why literally no Iranian dietitian will ever put you on a calories deficit. They write you a big guide and tell you what to avoid or what to eat more and then you can get inspiration with other food through that guide
This is SO interesting and fascinating! Thanks for doing all the leg work and delivering the info to us!
Thanks for talking about our paper! As a scientist and dietitian- it makes me happy to better understand why certain eating patterns are beneficial. Understanding mechanisms and variability in response is key for precision nutrition.
