Acid Reflux Medicine May Cause Osteoporosis

Stomach acid–blocking proton pump inhibitor drugs—PPIs with brand names like Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, Protonix, and AcipHex—appear to significantly increase the risk of bone fractures.

I recently gave a webinar on osteoporosis. We’ll post the recording in a few weeks, so stay tuned for that. In the meantime, check out my previous video on osteoporosis, Fall Prevention Is the Most Important Thing for Preventing Osteoporosis Bone Fractures ( ).

I was on them for 14 years, and no one ever said anything, not my GI, not my GP. I finally weaned myself off but still go back for short periods whenever I need OTC NSAIDs for an extended period of time.

My heartburn came from hiatal hernia. The only thing that helped (big surprise) was a whole foods plant based diet, low fat. Cut out the CRAP and grease, more fiber. I lost weight and the heartburn is gone. I did notice a difference right away but it took losing weight for it to be completely resolved. YMMV
