Best Recovery Smoothie! | Recipe + Ingredient Breakdown

I have had some questions regarding the smoothie you guys always see me drinking! Here I go into more detail on each ingredient.

Food can be such a powerful tool and to think that so many people just shake up protein and water after their workout hurts my brain. Watch this and refuel better.

Anyone else on the Turmeric train? If there is one spice I would love to see people consuming it is Turmeric. The evidence is mounting on this nutraceutical becoming one of the most beneficial available to us. Get it in ya!

    • Timmy.garden says:

Simnett Nutrition Dr Greger put it on its daily dozen so, definitely!

    • DaleAmigaMan says:

Yes I always have Turmeric in my post workout smoothie 🙂 Always a banana, apple, Kale, Spinach, Flax Seeds, Maca Powder, Pine Pollen and sometimes mixed berries, Spirulina and a scoop of protein powder. I don’t get anywhere near as sore as I used to before I became vegan and I workout harder now too.
EDIT: Oh and I pre mix Black Pepper with my Turmeric so I don’t forget to add it.

    • John Langley - Part Time Triathlete says:

Turmeric and Black pepper with my brown rice nearly everyday

    • Josh Johnson says:

Simnett Nutrition Most definitely! We take veggie cap turmeric, but it’s so expensive! I have noted every video what you put in your smoothies.

Currently taking a non-gmo vegan high calorie shake post workout, but still want to incorporate unprocessed shakes as well.

Thank you so much for all of your information!!

    • Craig M. Calzaretta says:

Dude, you are having WAY too much fun! Don’t you know you’re supposed to take yourself more seriously?!? I love these videos!

  • Daniel DeFontes says:

I always make huge 1000 calorie smoothies after my workouts too! I usually use only 2-3 bannanas but a lot of berries. I love adding steel cut oats to thicken it and add extra calories/gains. Ive been on the flax seed wave for like 2 months now because of you and i am absolutely loving it!!!

    • Simnett Nutrition says:

Really cool man! Amazing feedback. I love that you made the smoothie work for you. I do these sometimes, maybe I will do a video featuring a less sugary high calorie smoothie and you will know who inspired it!

  • Austin Myers says:

Hey Derek! Okay so I was following a couple female vegan channels and trying their different vegan eating methods and man they just weren’t working for me. I was contemplating going back to just being a vegetarian because I kept having that dairy craving. I’d eat the fo meats and burgers because I thought,” hey protein! I need this as a replacement.” And I was on and tried so many protein powders but then I came across your videos and I’m only 4 days into the green smoothie( which I was already having just not scaled up enough) and wow…I FEEL UNSTOPPABLE!! Energy is no longer an ISSUE! I go past dairy in the store while starved and I’m still able to say NO! It’s amazing! My taste buds are already changing and I’m craving the whole plant food more than dairy! I’ve never been a fan of meat really so that’s never been the issue but man dairy ruled my life when I was hungry. I didn’t understand it at all but after watching some of your videos and just jumping all in? I FEEL GREAT! This works so well with me! Not only that but all day! I’ve got more energy, I’m consuming more vegetables and fruits and feeling amazing! Thanks so much for everything you put out into the world! You’re so inspirational and I truly hope to guide people the way you do someday with my own nutritional practices, rock on!

    • Simnett Nutrition says:

Amazing! Such a great story. It really is surreal hearing all these positive testimonies. I think your message is great, what you were doing wasn’t working for you so you kept digging until you found what worked. So happy to have your support. You can do this too! You just have to start. I had no idea when I first started, trust me. It’s a grind. You just have to do it better, more often and for longer than everyone else.

    • Charles says:

You know I’ve been searching for vegan meals in high protien and I only got Skinnier. I havent tried the smoothie but I will very soon. Dont you ever stop what you do. You spread out postive vibes the entire video I was smiling. Have a wonderful day!

    • Bendry Ritonga says:

Just add some milk and it will be even more better đź’Ş

    • Gabrielle Archambault says:

I had the same problem, and I’m definitely feeling amazing a week into watching Derek’s videos and trying out his advice and recipes. A lot of other channels just don’t show high enough calorie recipes or big enough portions if you are doing anything other than regular daily activity such as walking to and from an office job type thing. I was dying after my workouts but now I’m feeling really good and actually hitting my calorie goals.

  • Romez Wilson says:

Been Vegan for about 2 months now and I’ve been seeing/feeling great results! I just graduated, playing college football and I would constantly have bad knee pain whether it be from the workouts or on the field playing. After graduating, I continued working out at an advanced level and the knee pain would not leave. This affected my running, squats (and other leg workouts) never allowing me to train to my fullest potential. After doing my research an religiously following your page I went cold turkey and pursued the vegan route. As of today following this exact smoothie pattern along with my plant base diet, I LITERALLY have NO KNEE PAIN anymore! On occasion I still feel a little pain during long car rides, but I’ve only been vegan for exactly 1 month and 1 week! (Who’s counting though lol)

Sorry for the long post, but I really wanted to let you know you’ve been such a big help in my journey. I’ve been taking pictures every week of my progression. After I complete 2-3 months training hard (and gaining weight) in this new life stlye, I too plan on telling my story through Youtube and Instagram following your steps to spread the word of veganism and breaking the stereotype of “You can’t be Vegan and get gains!) Thank you again friend.

  • Adan Gonzalez says:

When you say “Potential Recovery” you are totally right. I am not a vegan myself, but have been following your advice and reducing all type of meat consumption and I have to say that I don’t feel fatigued as I used to after workouts with this shake. A few hours after, I feel my body replenished. As a red boned Mexican, I love meat, but the results of you plant based theories are much beneficial for the body and I’m a witness. Thank you.

  • Joseph A says:

Thank you for doing this video. It’s really great to see someone so fit who also happens to be vegan. I’ve recently made the decision to stop consuming animals again at quite possibly the most inconvenient time…the start of my second marathon training. My concern was that I’d become too thin and feel compelled to go back as I’ve done on two previous tries. Intrigued about that recovery shake. Third time’s a charm I hope. All the best…

  • Caitlin Graziano says:

I’ve been following your channel for a few weeks, and I love your videos! I finally just made your green smoothie after a run, and WOW it’s YUMMY! I used 2 bananas, 3 dates, a bunch of arugula, turmeric, black pepper, and chia seeds. I am not fully vegan, but I appreciate all of the recipes to integrate more whole foods into my diet.

  • Ethan Kurth says:

Hey, Derek! I love the channel, you say a lot that people don’t want to spend 2 hours watching you talk but I’ve binge watched your channel for close to 3 hours. You’re full of awesome and helpful information. I’ve been vegan for a few months (was vegetarian for a year prior) and decided to try to make one of your smoothies! They look amazing so I thought, why not?! I put in 2 bananas (don’t like them very much) a handful of dates, a couple strawberries, some hemp seeds, and of course, arugala. But the bananas are taking over and are all I can taste, is there a way I can mask the flavor more or am I stuck with the banana?

Hey Derek I have to say I am not a vegan but I love your videos and they inspire me to use your recipes into my own meal prep and I have started those fruit smoothies with the turmeric and they are amazing, I feel so reenergized after I drink them. Thank you so much for this information you give to us!

  • Hoa Pham says:

I’m one of those that started drinking smoothies because of your videos. I had a preconception that health drinks are horrible tasting, but your recipe changed that. Thanks for making awesome videos!

  • 50sorrowC says:

I also drink a recovery smoothie , yours is however more complete! Mine contains bananas, raspberries, celery, dates, protein powder, soy milk and either fresh mint or extract of mint. I will definitely add flax seeds, turmeric and black pepper! Thanks again for the inspiration!

  • Brittney J. says:

Your channel has changed the way I look at health and fitness tremendously! Easy and super helpful!

  • Wakinyan Chief says:

I always take a turmeric supplement that has black pepper after all my workouts! I created my own high calorie omega 3 shake, it’s more like a chocolate moose, I’ve been drinking it everyday and it’s getting kind of old so I definitely will be trying your smoothie recipe out!

  • Jørgen Fallet Mosand says:

Yeah I started smoothies and bought a high speed blender cuz of you. A lot of good tips <3 I did not know flax seeds are so cheap. It's actually one of the cheapest proteins.
Mostly I use dates or raisins for sweet, but sometimes just normal brown sugar to.

I use parsley, celery, and one lime slice (with peel), for greens, I love the taste of that combo.

  • Brandon B says:

I love that Crystal is standing on the kitchen counter to film this. That’s dedication. 🙂 Thanks for the recipe!

  • CLOAK says:

Wife and I are going vegan to improve our health and we just made these for the first time and HOLY…wow, they’re so good I can’t believe I bothered with $6 sugary smoothiea from fast food joints with no nutrition for so long. My very picky, traditional American diet mom and sister came over and I shared the rest of the pitcher with them and they immediately fell in love. SO MUCH TO LOVE ABOUT THIS CHANNEL!

  • Debbie Kiefer says:

Love your smoothies and the addition of turmeric and black pepper. Going to add the tumeric and pepper tonight to try it. Been adding tumeric and pepper to most of my soups, oven fries, and even on baked tofu. It gives a beautiful golden color that enhances presentation of baked foods. Started doing this after seeing your videos on this dynamic duo. Thank you for your upbeat and fun videos! And all the great info! I’m 65 and love your channel! I’ve also saved a bunch of your recipes that my family loves too!

  • Robin GASPARD says:

You’re making me smile everytime I am watching your amazing videos. Thank you for being so inspiring! 💚
