From #Sk*nnytok diet trends & weight loss hacks, to influencer health tips and E D culture, were putting toxicity under the microscope in this evidence-based breakdown. Hey everyone I’m Abbey Sharp welcome to Abbey’s Kitchen! As a registered dietitian and 2000s teen who lived through peak toxic diet culture, I’ve got some thoughts on why #Sk*nnytok is setting off alarm bells for millennials. But I’m also a science girly, so I’m putting bias aside to examine the viral #Sk*nnytok weight loss tricks and what the research actually says. From calorie-counting mantras to metabolism “boosters,” we’re diving deep. While some users claim these tips healed their relationship with food, I’m not convinced that’s the whole story. Fair warning—this video discusses weight loss and disordered eating, so please take care of yourself.

My jaw was on the floor at those last affirmations! I cannot believe this stuff is openly circulating on a platform with young people. I really thought we were making progress as a society in the “dieting” department but I’m afraid my faith in humanity has diminished a little bit after reading those.
I KNOW RIGHT!
12:15 Maybe don’t include a gif of Taylor Swift in a skinnytok video when she used to suffer with an ED…
I put her in it because I’m the biggest Swiftie on earth, that’s all 🙂
As a die hard swiftie, I think it’s totally okay.
That “eat an apple” thing – my mom every day. Gen-X here. Eat an apple, drink water. First thing I did when I got my own place was buy Kool-Aid and white bread. 🙄
Haha love it!
This is bringing me back to the 2013 ProAna Tumblr pages
Scary times
This is why I watch Abbey and Will Tennyson and not these people 😂
I LOVE WILL TOO!!!!
i fear these tiktoks will cause so many people to adapt a restrict and binge phase… its so mentally unhealthy it makes me so upset
That’s my fear too…
You’d be surprised at how many men have that problem too.. some of the athletes always see a belly when they look in the mirror no matter how much cardio they do or how much weight they’ve lost. I had gotten a DEXA scan and my visceral fat had come in at 0.59 lb. I highly recommend that one for anybody, and not just because they can measure belly fat and total body fat separately. It tells you so much more..
@dan-qe1tb ive watched a whole documentary about body builders who deal with body dysmorphia , most were men some were women. i also have a male friend who suffered from restrict and binge as well.
I don’t want to be skinny, but I also don’t want to be morbidly obese. It’s been an effort trying to get away from thin idolization while redefining my idea of healthy on my process to get to a better place with my body.
I love your videos abbey. PS you are glowing in this and look super beautiful!
Honestly all the sponsorships and trying to sell something every 30 seconds is off putting.
Also if you just have to eat an Oreo or you will binge…. You need to see a therapist and have an eating disorder.
These, are nowhere near as offensive as Bobby Parrish’s or Eric Berg’s plugs, but yes, tied selling seems to be happening more and more. Simon Hill is very knowledgeable, but his supplement pushing is getting annoying. In some cases he has gone directly from explaining the mistake, to making the mistake: going from pointing out supplements that aren’t useful to pushing supplements that aren’t useful. I even think Brad Stanfield’s Micro Vitamin is a waste of money. He claims he makes little money off of it.. I don’t think any multivitamin is worth $55 a month.
Perhaps I don’t understand the whole process, but I don’t understand why influencers need sponsorships. How much money does it cost to make a video like this? Most of them get ad revenue from YT if there’s ads when people open the links that are in the video header.
I once had a roommate who had an eating disorder. I had asked him what had happened to my bag of Decadent chocolate cookies. He had responded, “I had inhaled them”. That was 1500 calories or more in one go. He had a huge belly. I have never understood why people do this. I stop when I’ve had enough
I remember when I was in my teens and early 20s, going to bed with a grumbling stomach and feeling so proud of myself. It makes me so sad thinking back to that now.
I almost always want an apple so I would fail that test unless of course it had to be a soft one or like a crabapple . From a diet standpoint ,apples are also one of the more filling fruits!
You look so beautiful in that Olive green jacket!
I don’t love alllll these videos about weight loss. I love your videos but I also like just learning health stuff too
Gen X here… eat an apple a day was never a problem, i loved them so it was water instead. If you are hungry, you are probably just thirsty drink 3 to 4 glasses of water.
I was forced to partake in every crazy (raw potatoes, jello packets, and tuna?? 🤪) extremely unhealthy and restricted diet of the 80s and 90s. I did the same in my own place… and made up for everything I missed growing up, which was pretty detrimental.
It took a very long time to unravel all of the misconceptions and complete lies to have a healthy relationship with food.
Now, I have MCAS and have very limited choices. It is triggering when people think it’s a restrictive diet to get skinny. I have asked my doctors to stop referencing weight loss and say, ” You are looking healthy.” I don’t care what size I am as long as I am healthy and my body is swollen from inflammation and allergic reactions.
I get really bad low blood sugars and this makes eating ‘small’ something I will never participate in because I’m not trying to get a blood sugar level below 60.
13:00 If I wanna gain weight, let me eat apples! I like apples, don’t think they’re boring, like the crunch and sweet/sour taste. But: if I eat an apple, it will only increase my hunger. Every damn time – eating an apple because I feel hungry and 20 mins later I could binge the whole content of my fridge and then some. I tried it so many times, I only eat apples as dessert now, when I am already not hungry anymore.
That happens to me with apples, too!
I can’t believe that in an era of so much information, our younger generation is falling into the trap of having women still be adept to be small or sacrificing everything to achieve a certain body type or figure. How much longer will we as women accept this! My 140lbs in my 5’6” body will never look the same as anyone else’s with the same frame!!! Because .. DNA! Where are we continuing to fail?! Our generation is now struggling with the low muscle mass we encounter ourselves now after years of being small and fear of fat, while now nutrition experts like Abbey are providing so much good nutrition information and beneficial tools for an actual healthy lifestyle, body and longevity!!! I know I know! The social media pressure and algorithms for our young is real, but I truly feel something has to be done starting at home! Just venting here and of course it is a very personal opinion. Once again my respect to “whatever works” for anyone and to each its own! But, THANK YOU Abbey! I shall continue to share your content with the youngsters in my circle!
13:27 this is so real and honestly going for the oreo makes me crave the “healthy” food now cause I know it makes me feel full and satisfied
I think Skinnytok doesn’t understand food volume of certain foods (like water content in food, fiber content, and protein) which allows one to eat more.
