Best (and Worst) Fruit for Blood Sugar and Low Carb Dieting: I Ran the Tests!

Thanks to Levels for sponsoring this video. To get started, go to and get 2 additional months free on the annual Levels membership.

Using a continuous glucose monitor from Levels, I tested my blood sugar after eating five popular fruits: a banana, strawberries, grapes, an apple, and an orange. How do you think they will match up? I share my results in the video.

I stick with blueberry’s and kiwis mainly.

  • Diane says:

Oh the banana has got to be the worst, guessing before I watch 😊

  • john k says:

    Well presented.

  • Green Sombrero says:

    comparing berries would be awesome

  • Jenn says:

I read somewhere that you should eat the fastest digestible food first. So that would mean eating the fruit then your meal. Do you think either way would effect blood sugar in a significant amount?

    • Dr. Becky Gillaspy says:

Quickly digesting refined carbs would spike blood sugar if eaten first. BTW, that was the topic of last week’s video: https://youtu.be/BDXckwpg–c As for fruit, the amount and types of natural sugars make a difference, as discussed in this video.

  • Rae Dorin says:

I use a finger stick and I’ve found the strawberries almost don’t touch my glucose and apples spike it hard. I wonder why we are so different

    • Dr. Becky Gillaspy says:

Different metabolisms, different foods paired with the fruits, different types of apples…There are many factors involved, so it is good that you test yourself to see how you respond.

  • sean veach says:

Never liked fruit. One of the happiest days of my life when I figured out I didn’t need to eat any. Good info for those that do though.

  • Diana Zoelle says:

strawberries, apple, orange, grape, banana ?

  • Snowbird says:

    Best to worst;
    1. Apples
    2. Strawberry
    3. Orange
    4. Banana
    5. Grapes

  • Patricia Pendlbury says:

Did you have your coffee black no cream no sugar

  • gman77gas says:

Amber and u must have gotten this tester from the co to test and put on your utube. She just did the same test.

  • Scottlp2 says:

    1. Green apples better other apples. 2. Risk to benefit ratio of berries/cherries worth it. 3. Go for walk after eating (10-15 min) to lower blood sugar

  • Lisa M says:

So interesting! Thank you. I took a cooking course in Spain in May, and for dessert, we prepared a simple fruit salad. Diced orange and apple dressed with a tiny, tiny pinch of salt and a tiny drizzle of EVOO! Of course, this was eaten in moderation and eaten very slowly (as were the rest of the courses). It was delicious and hit the spot. Our instructor told us her elderly father eats this every day after his large meal of the day (lunch).

Also, I want to try the Levels glucose monitor but I am a big baby when it comes to needles. The thought of applying it terrifies me. Any suggestions?

    • Dr. Becky Gillaspy says:

I am not brave either when it comes to needles. Applying Levels is not like getting a shot. The applicator feels like a bug bite. I apply it with no trepidation.

  • Stephen Schulz says:

Pretty much as I expected, thanks for the confirmation.

  • BlackWorldTraveler says:

Grapes are my only candy in life next to 70% Swiss chocolate.
Always grapes in my home. Not into wine and other alcohol drinks.
Don’t know about spikes but no diabetes.
My annual blood tests and A1C are fine.
Intermittent fasting and high fiber diet is a regular thing with me.

  • Becky Hammond says:

Out of those 5 I eat strawberries and apples
