Beef shouldn’t be cheaper in my opinion
Going on a bit of an topic adjacent rant:
I feel like we need to reform the food industry to try and reduce wasteful over farming. Cuz while plant “meat” may be better for the environment, not everyone can afford it. A lot of dietary supplement foods like Vegan burgers are just too expensive, making it a privilege to be able to afford it. Cuz ultimately a huge reason why USAmericans are overweight is due to poverty and the fact that “healthy” foods are way too expensive to buy for most people.
Meat is relatively “cheaper” because it’s heavily subsidized by the government with your tax dollars. If they did the same for plant based products, they would also be affordable.
@drklawz9179 that’s (at least in part) my point. If the government used the money we already pay them to make plant based products cheaper, more people would be inclined to buy them. Which would help give people healthy alternatives that won’t run up their already expensive (from inflation) food budgets.
Could you compare how well the non-heme iron in the Beyond Burger is absorbed vs. the heme iron in the beef burger?
Beyond Burger doesn’t have that, that’s Impossible Burger.
@@lavenderoh Beyond Burger has heme iron? From which ingredient?
I’d put it this way. In my pregnancy yoga class, three meat eaters / omnivores had iron issues and put on iron supplements. I was the only vegan and my bloods were always perfect
You don’t need to even eat meat replacement products as a vegan (which I generally don’t anyway) to hit iron/protein needs
I really enjoy your approach to this. There are so many reasons outside of saving the animals, and being repulsed by meat products, that people don’t eat meat, so having the alternative is nice. An explanation of the 2 side by side is gracefully out and well explained. Thanks for not shaming anyone here.
I have no issue with the plant based burgers and love the analysis of the beef vs. plant based side by side. My concerns are more based on food sensitivity and price. My husband found out in a very big way that he cannot eat pea protein or fava bean protein in any way, shape, or form. After staying with vegan friends for a week he came home with horrible GI issues and dehydrated to the point of being admitted to our local hospital. This again happened after having a cup of coffee with a vegan (oat milk) coffee creamer. It has happened 4 other times as well and after evaluating everything he ate or drank during each episode the common ingredient is the plant protein. Though rare people should be aware that not everyone can tolerate these proteins. We’ve since had to watch every single product we buy because it is showing up in most items labeled high protein, including those not specifically labeled vegan.
And many many more people can’t tolerate dairy or eggs.. it’s common sense that people can be allergic or sensitive to any product that goes on or in your body. It is not at all more prevalent in plant based foods, in fact it’s the opposite.
And on the reverse side someone like me (and many others I’ve found out) are allergic to beef, so if I want to eat a burger as an occasional food, I either have to have plant based, game meat or alternative commercial meats. I don’t care much for chicken or turkey burgers I don’t like the texture, and while game meat is free for me (harvesting rights) I don’t actually grind much because like most hunters and butchers you try to get as many good cuts and make as little waste as possible, so out of one moose I might get 3lbs of ground meat. So plant based is my typical go to because it’s relatively accessible, but the price does make it a more occasional food.
Likewise I have to check every label because it would amaze you how many products beef or beef derivatives are in, I would argue they show up in many more foods than plant proteins do

It wont have 6x more sodium by the time it’s prepared. People don’t just grill unseasoned beef patties.😂
good point, i didn’t even think of that
Even pre-made beef burgers (which are already seasoned) have far less salt and other BS than these fake alternatives. Making beef burgers from scratch with extra lean beef mince is an even better option (even with seasoning).
As someone who cooks a lot of various dishes and is not afraid of seasoning… I have never once seasoned my beyond burgers. It’s just something I’ve never done. I like to add goat cheese and caramelized onions to my burgers at home so I’ve never thought to add anything extra to the cooking burger 😂
@@TheNikNik212 they were talking about seasoning the beef patties and trying to claim that once seasoned beef patties will have just as much if not more sodium than beyond burgers which is completely false, even when comparing pre-made beef burgers.
@@Lizard_Queen-ld5uj yes…I know what they were talking about. I made a related but separate comment about how I’ve never once thought to season my burgers (including my beyond burgers). Like on one hand have I been missing out, but in the other hand less sodium for sure.
My best friend is allergic to beef. This option is great for someone like her
Chicken or turkey would be even better…
@Lizard_Queen-ld5uj Chicken and turkey are good but they’re not as close to the classic burger as beyond burgers are
@@bellagab3 Nutritionally they are far superior.
@Lizard_Queen-ld5uj I understand. But if you want to emulate a classic burger, beyond is closer than chicken or turkey
What a load of drivel. As an RD you shouldn’t be promoting highly processed foods as nutritionally equivalent to whole foods. Lean beef is an extremely high quality protein source and can be healthily consumed 3-4 times per week.
I never really read the full ingredient list for the Beyond burger, but now that you highlighted it I can see why the one I ate didn’t sit well. I’m allergic to beets.
I had one burger when Burger King introduced them. It was tasty, but not exactly like eating a beef burger.
A couple of hours later, I started to feel a bit off. A few hours after that, I felt quite unwell. It took a full day to get back to normal. Luckily, I do take a daily antihistamine. I believe that saved me from a major reaction (which involves projectile 🤮).
Beyond burger is garbage 😮
Pros of faux meat option – all the taste and nutrition, minus the cruelty and killing.
No brainer really.
I LOVE that you didn’t bash the beyond beef burger !! I am allergic to red meat (unfortunately developed the allergy after lymes disease ) and I’m not able to eat it anymore. I have no other options if I want to enjoy a burger than to use vegan alternatives. Yes, I primarily use beans to make them or opt for chicken / fish options…. HOWEVER the beyond beef burger is good and satisfying!! I really appreciate your take
