Exposing MENOPAUSE WEIGHT LOSS Truths & Myths With Jenn Huber – Bite Back With Abbey Sharp

A huge thanks to today’s sponsor, TENA!

Welcome to Bite Back with Abbey Sharp! 🎙️ This episode dives into perimenopause and menopause, a time when women are bombarded with pseudoscience and diet culture myths. From hormone resets to detoxes, misleading wellness trends can distract us from real, evidence-based strategies—and even increase the risk of disordered eating.

Joining me is Jenn Salib Huber, a dietitian specializing in menopause nutrition, to debunk the myths and share gentle, science-backed strategies for navigating this stage of life.

We’ll be using women-specific language even though I fully acknowledge that not everyone who goes through menopause identifies as a woman.

⚠️ Discussion of disordered eating and weight loss themes, so please listen with care. This episode is for educational purposes only and not a substitute for healthcare.

Love this Abbey! Going to listen to the whole podcast – have you considered doing a series? I am premature menopause at 37 and on HRT and would love for you to do an episode on HRT too!

When I was in my 40s I got misdiagnosed with major depressive disorder. Was hospitalized and forced to be on antidepressants for six weeks. Completely destroyed my gut. I started vomiting blood, they just gave me more medication to stop the bleeding. The antidepressants weren’t working but they kept upping the dose instead of stopping and/or reevaluating. I’ve had weight problems ever since, menopause made it worse.
Now I know it was autistic burnout, not mdd. Got my diagnosis at age 57. I’m still dealing with this last autistic burnout but I’m slowly getting a handle on my gut issues. Hopefully it isn’t too late.

As a one-time diabetic, I stand by a Low-Carb lifestyle overall. 90% of the carbs I want are either junk foods like potato chips and chocolate or relatively empty bland carbs like rice or oatmeal, which only serves as a substrate for salt and/or sugar. Keto lets you have all the non-starchy veg you want so it’s only as devoid if fiber as you choose. Having a low-carb diet is a simple way for me to say no to ultraprocessed foods and focus on getting enough protein instead of filling up on bread.

This was a great conversation. So many changes abruptly that needs to be normalized. It’s hard to see a new body during this stage of life.

  • @arica1798 says:

I don’t eat animal protein. I eat a lot of fiber. I try not to eat processed foods. Is this healthy?

  • @annawitter5161 says:

My weight did not change with menopause but my shape did!😢

Perimenopause at 37 😱😱😱. Everyday it fills me with anger and anxiety about what women have to go through in life.

  • @ababy6074 says:

If you resistance training, you can build muscle which will help keep fat gain at bay much easier. Your actual metabolism doesn’t actually really change much at all, but the more muscle you have the better off you’ll be. You have to biological it AND keep it, and that takes work and time. You just have to put that in.
