Friday Favorite: Benefits of Black Cumin Seed Nigella Sativa for Weight Loss

For three cents a day, black cumin may improve cholesterol and triglyceride levels, blood pressure, and blood sugar control, as well as accelerate the loss of body fat.

Consuming ¼ teaspoon of ground black cumin a day is one of my 21 Tweaks for accelerating weight loss. You can see all of them in my free Daily Dozen app (on iOS ( ) and Android ( )) and read about them in-depth in How Not to Diet ( ). (All proceeds from my books are donated to charity.) I also cover some of black cumin’s weight-loss benefits in my Evidence-Based Weight Loss ( ) presentation.

UPDATE: Hat tip to George Lawrence for questioning the government’s weight per serving tables and suggesting I weigh it myself. I bought a scale and got 3.2g per teaspoon, which makes a quarter teaspoon barely a gram (0.8g). So, the 1 to 2 grams a day may be more like ¼ to ½ teaspoon a day.

    What brand do you reccomend?

    • @dianeladico1769 says:

Do you have any Southeast Asian or Mediterranean markets near you? That’s where I get mine. Amazon has a few brands and I’ve had good luck with Terrasoul products.

  • @YehiaAhmed-y5x says:

    Thanks

  • @ScheveSneeuwSchuifSchep says:

Definitely gonna include this in my diet, Dr. Greger seems especially animated and lively when he talks about it!

  • @thistle_boy says:

But how to gain weight? I’ll eat everything, all the crap you shouldn’t, and can’t gain a pound. Wait til your 30’s they said. Wait til your 40’s they said. Gonna eat ice cream and a pack of Oreos for breakfast just to keep the wind from blowing me away today.

    • @familyof3 says:

Yes I have the same problem! I’m 44 years old and I weigh only 45 kg for 1.61 m. That’s a BMI of 17 or so. I eat all I can!! (And WFPB only)
So – should I eat nigella seeds or not?

    • @svalentina3075 says:

      OMG me too!

  • @jball1267 says:

Since black cumin is “similar” to black pepper, does it boost the efficacy of turmeric? Thank you.

    • @dianeladico1769 says:

From PubMed “Thymoquinone (TQ) and piperine (PIP) are major bioactive constituents of the black seed (Nigella sativa) and black pepper (Piper nigrum), respectively. ”
      Apparently so, great idea!

FYI be careful if you take antidepressant ssris – can actually give mild seratonin syndrome

  • @jencollier8306 says:

I put about a tsp whole Blk cumin in my smoothies at noon, and it blends in easily and definitely has an appetite suppression affect that lasts all afternoon!✨

What is the best time to take. Please advise 🙏

  • @AndrewPawley11 says:

    I love this channel!

  • @cybrarian9 says:

Respectfully, your vocal fry and styling of speaking is something I can tolerate, but the animated version of you is not. I will investigate the Black Cumin as I know at least one person who has had success with it.

  • @BrianAllenWS says:

OK, that animated cartoon thing is really weird (and un-necessary). Save the money you spent on that…

  • @patp550 says:

Animated is fine. Ignore the haters. Great content.
