Friday Favorites: Foods That Heal and Prevent Leaky Gut

Common drugs, foods, and beverages can disrupt the integrity of our intestinal barrier. Which foods should we avoid to prevent leaky gut? Which foods and food components can boost the integrity of our intestinal barrier?

I have one other video devoted to leaky gut. See The Leaky Gut Theory of Why Animal Products Cause Inflammation ( ).

I also talked about gut leakiness in my SIBO series. Check out Are Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) Tests Valid? ( ) and Fiber vs. Low FODMAP for SIBO Symptoms ( ).

For more on preventing gut dysbiosis, see Gut Dysbiosis: Starving Our Microbial Self ( ).

Once you’ve figured out that swimming in particular waters is a terrible idea because they are shark infested you don’t spend your energy optimizing how to swim faster there, you instead focus on improving your boating experience. Everyone who follows nutritionfacts already knows that plant based is a given. People come here to get more encouragement for that lifestyle (reminders of why it’s a good thing) or to learn how to optimize the details. You aren’t showing your cleverness by pointing out the obvious, you’re just making yourself look like a jerk.

What about my daily baby aspirin after my heart surgery?

    • @gmailSpeedbrake2 says:

There is a procedure now cardio thoracic surgeons do, I believe it is done by catheter, closes a small hole in the heart where the clots happen. Its relatively new procedure done at places like Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic from what I’ve heard from patients but not verified. Google scholar, medical library search, not Google by itself. Google scholar skips the propaganda from big pharma, no ads, all academic information. Make sure to do background check on authors of studies as it is unfortunately more frequent to find frauds being published. Naturopathic medicine, ayurvedic medicine have alternatives without side effects like certified Nattokinase from Japan. Mayo Aerospace medicine has studied this for example to test Japanese medical findings.

  • @VeganLinked says:

This makes me think of the people who claim to have tried to be vegan. They had dysbiosis from some pre-existing condition or something they did screwed their intestines up which was unrelated to being vegan. If they were actually vegan they would have consulted a physician, dietitian, or nutritionist that practices lifestyle medicine and found a way to resolve the leaky gut. But instead they start Yo-Yo dieting. If they go carnivore they don’t resolve the underlying issue just the symptoms. I think this is because meat digests in the small intestines and the stomach. And it causes a change in bacteria.

Eating plants support a healthy intestinal wall by building up a diverse microbiome that supports intestinal Health. The person that damages their colon pretending to be carnivore might get some transient results and symptom reduction since they aren’t trying to digest something in their large intestine. This gives the illusion of being better for that individual who is maladapted. But it sets them up for failure in the long run as they increase risk chronic disease without their awareness; hence those diseases being chronic, because they are insidious and develop over time. You don’t feel the systemic inflammation, you don’t feel cancer, heart disease, neurodegenerative disease, etc developing until it’s too late and then you have completely different symptoms to deal with.

    • @maxm3515 says:

Most vegans have trash diets. Just because you don’t eat meat doesn’t mean you’re eating healthy. This is the core of the issue. It’s hard to 1. get adequate calorie intake on a real whole foods plant based diet, and 2. most people don’t know how to properly meal prep or cook for themselves, so they become reliant on processed vegan options. It’s sad because the plant based diet is certainly the one that promotes health and longevity, but only when done correctly – i.e. actually eating a diverse array of vegetables, legumes, nuts, and olive oil.

With your videos, I was able to counter my sister’s following of dr. gundry’s advice to cut all lectins out of her diet. I’m happy to say she is eating beans & lentils again, increasing portion size as she can tolerate more. (She obviously had gut dysbiosis and all her gp was prescribing were antacids! ) Thank you Dr. Greger
