Test Your Carb Tolerance with a Saltine Cracker?
Thanks to Levels for sponsoring this video. To get started, go to and get 2 additional months free on the annual Levels membership.
How many carbs can you eat in a day to maintain or lose weight? Well, this simple, unsalted cracker might just tell you. That is according to Dr. Sharon Moalem, who proposed in his book, The DNA Restart, that the speed at which a saltine cracker breaks down in your mouth determines how well your body breaks down carbohydrates and, therefore, how many you can eat in a day without suffering consequences like weight gain.
You might be thinking, that sounds silly. I agree. It does sound silly. But I listened to his book and his argument, and I was intrigued enough to eat a few crackers.
If you are intrigued as well, watch this video, learn the mechanism behind the experiment, try it at home, and let me know your results and your thoughts.
And if you are skeptical of this method, I will discuss other ways to determine your carb tolerance. So, let’s get started.

This is so interesting.
We will try this with a potato bc my son has Celiac disease. I’m pretty excited bc I know I’m insulin resistant.
Good morning, I just don’t eat carbs anyway, only carbs I eat is 10-15 pieces of Berries with Kefir, I do Healthy Keto and OMAD.
I do a lower carb WW plan. Mainly bc I know I’m insulin resistant and when I do eat carbs, my heart races.

Healthy keto means keto for part of the day, mot all of the day. The target for health is metabolic homeostasis, which requires that metabolism switches between glucose and ketones regularly. It doesn’t have to be every day, but metabolic homeostasis requires periods of ketosis and periods of glycolysis.
@@Steven_ologist Isn’t that crazy? Before I went low carb, many years ago, I didn’t have that issue but I had hypoglycemic episodes. Now I just have the racing heart and nausea. It’s pretty wild how our bodies adjust and then react.
This is really interesting, thank you
Thank you so so much, you’re having extremely hands on, insightful and educational content, it’s better than most other channels
Always good to see Dr Keith 👏
For comparison it would have been good to hear what was your husband’s actual response as well.
Good morning Dr Becky & Dr Keith, good to see you both 🥰 This was an interesting test indeed 😃. 🙋🏻♀️from 🇨🇦
None of us have any crackers and we don’t want to buy them!!!
Edit to say this is absolutely fascinating thank you both!
❤
Certainly not going to get unsalted crackers LOL. Who eats unsalted, but I am also intrigued and will try this at home. My ancestors passed down Type 2 – it is amazing.
I love sitting at the table with my wife and watching her eat any and everything AND is skinny in mid-50’s.
This was very interesting. I will have to try when I get some crackers. Keith you look great! So glad to see you too. Becky you are my “go to”!!! Thanks for this video. I have to admit I was surprised at your results. Keith I thought would be your number and you would’ve been his. Interesting. I’m looking forward to seeing how I do with this.
Don’t eat high glycemic carbs like crackers only kale, arugula, etc. For two YEARS I ate a minimum of 8,000 calories a day and didn’t gain weight. I would eat 11 sandwiches a day. Now at age 75 I still weigh what I did back in 1967 (140 lbs/29″ waist). Don’t think I have a problem with carbs.
This is interesting. Thanks for sharing. Now to get some unsalted crackers
My ancestors lived on a Caribbean island eating starch and fruit but here I am pre diabetic. I also have European genes from neolithic farmers who definitely ate grains. I think I destroyed my genes with modern medicine and it’s too late.
But when you eat so low carb for so long, you body can’t handle carbs anymore. That’s why they tell you not to eat low carb going into having oral glucose tolerance testing done.
Why no salt?
Very interesting test. Love your channel Becky! Thank you for all the great information!
I would choose Organic at least without all the chems..
I saw video about 6 months ago from a UK doctor using very low carb, whole foods diets to treat his obese, diabetic, and metabolic syndrome patients. He mentioned the same test that he uses as a general screening tool for carb intolerance and insulin resistance. He doesn’t use it as a specific diagnostic method. He uses a plain wheat thins type of cracker, instead of the unsalted saltines.
I know this is off topic but I’m asking here because if I ask on an older video I think you may not see it. Question from your Keto Snack Food Pyramid. I’m going on a week long cruise. Your snack video will come in handy. My question is (there will be alcohol involved)…As a habit, I drink socially in moderation. So responsible, I know.😅 what is the lowest carb alcohol beverage? Can you do a video? Recommend a video?
DocB and DocK! Interesting…may have to try this!
