The Highest Antioxidant: Apple, Bean, Berry, Lentil, or Nut?

The best apple, bean, berry, lentil, and nut are the ones you’ll eat the most of, but if you don’t have a strong preference, which has the highest antioxidant power?

    I love this channel!

This reminds me of your old-school videos.

  • @PeacefulHiker060 says:

    😮 oh wow that’s interesting! 😊

  • @lubbergrub says:

Pro tip: Store your nuts in the freezer for a longer shelf life.

Buying nuts in bulk can make them cheaper, but only if you can eat them all before they go rancid. The fats in nuts keep them from freezing solid, so you can eat them straight out of the freezer. I keep a big bag of walnuts in the freezer, and it extends the shelf life by 6 months to a year.

    • @suicune2001 says:

I was putting mine in the refrigerator. Thanks for the tip. 😊

    • @herculesrockefeller8969 says:

I keep my bags of nuts from Costco in the freezer, as you say it works great. Other things I keep in there – potato chips, Cheerios.

    • @VeganLinked says:

The problem with buying them in bulk is you got to make sure there’s no mycotoxins so you have to be sure to get them fresh and bulk. And don’t buy them from bulk bins where they have a higher propensity toward mycotoxins.

    • @dianeladico1769 says:

Yes-I stock up when they go on sale at Christmas. I get the one pound bags and store each in a vacuum bag. Once opened, they live in the fridge. I also store smaller portions of flax and sesame seeds the same way.

Apple peel helps me sleep and I find berries good for anxiety.

  • @Alexander-ok7fm says:

    Thank you!

  • @trapezius77 says:

What about soybeans? Should have had those in the beans comparison!

    • @ReligionsFakten says:

      Dude, Edamame…

    • @trapezius77 says:

@@ReligionsFakten edamame are fresh, green soybeans. I meant the dry ones, just like the rest of the beans in the comparison.

    • @VeganLinked says:

Yeah I was wondering about black beans, it would have been cool to see where edamame fits in the mix. But the more I dig in these comparisons seem oversimplified and kind of ridiculous.

  • @suicune2001 says:

    Great info!

  • @Ranjanapati07 says:

That’s why green lentils are given to patients during treatment in India

  • @dominicgaudin3400 says:

Now if I could get ads for beans instead of paleo!

  • @phillippinter7518 says:

Different antioxidant lists look different than this one, sometimes pecans are higher than walnuts, red delicious is higher than granny smith and almonds are higher than pine nuts, it depends on the individual sample, so dont go nutrient chasing

  • @JimmyCricket61258 says:

Why aren’t black beans on the list?

    • @VeganLinked says:

      I asked the same question!

    • @dianeladico1769 says:

Black turtle beans weren’t included in the database. Since it was referenced at the beginning of the video it seems all the data presented came from that study.
A quick check shows black beans being the highest in several studies.

  • @janerkenbrack3373 says:

Good thing I eat a variety of beans.

  • @yoginasser305 says:

Why weren’t black beans included on the bean chart? What I recall one of your old videos states that that’s the highest in antioxidants.

    • @VeganLinked says:

Funny I asked the same question and just noticed two other people did as well!

    • @iyankov96 says:

14 years ago he also suggested that red lentils had more antioxidant power compared to green lentils. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ__-aHzFus

    • @VeganLinked says:

Cool beans, for some reason he separates lentils from beans even though they’re all legumes. But I guess some nuts are too, heck everything is essentially just a seed when you really think about it. So we don’t even really know how they compare to each other. At the end of the day it’s like why does any of this even matter when we should just be eating variety and it’s really hard to compare when they all have such profoundly unique nutrient profiles. Like in that old video you referenced he mentions folate and beta carotene and what not.

  • @danman3163 says:

    Love the vids, doc.

  • @conscience-commenter says:

Granny smith , walnuts , blackberries, fava beans and green lentils .

  • @tarahh.3921 says:

🤔 When considering the legumes, doesn’t cooking destroy the antioxidants?

    • @VeganLinked says:

Well cooking increases the absorption of certain nutrients and may increase certain antioxidants but yeah, cooking can also destroy some antioxidants. There I can only imagine and assume they are doing these tests on cooked beans, hopefully at least. If you’re really trying to get the most out of antioxidants and nutrients then add some sprouts to the mix!

  • @ciejeargo says:

I love this! Such a practical video!

  • @bluwtrgypsy says:

Excellent video with great info. Just a bit too fast. I had to pause frequently. thank you.
