Biology major to the rescue: to the untrained eye yams and sweet potatoes are the same, in color and taste for the most part. However, they are in fact two different species of plants; yams are monocots and sweet potatoes are dicots (which refers to the number of embryonic budding leaves). Between the two plans there are vastly different nutritional values of vitamins and minerals (yams are low in a but high in c and such). Additionally monocots differ from dicots in plant structures like leaf shape/vascularity and number of petals on flower multiples of 3 vs 4 or 5 respectfully (yams have 6 sweet potatoes have 5). You can also tell from observing the structure of the xylem water transport and phloem sugar transport tubes inside the tubers themselves. Have fun with the knowledge!

    • Slay era says:

Malachi Jones I have no idea what to do with this muchknowledge but thanks for giving it! 😂

    • Alicia V says:

Soooo which one was the yam and which was the sweet potato in the video😂😂😂😂

    • Elodie says:

      yes educate us

    • Malachi Jones says:

I am confident in saying that they are both sweet potatoes. Yams are pretty white or purple in color, but sweet potatoes can be white, purple, or orange. What these most likely are sold as are jewel, garnet, or Beauregard yams (I’m guessing jewel based on skin color), which are really just sweet potatoes that have had there names confused as a result of American agricultural marketing over time. You will know yams when you eat them base on the texture: dry and very starchy. These white ones are most likely marketed as sweet potatoes only because I don’t think any white variety sweet potatoes lost their naming conventions. Which also explains why Derek is corrected on the orange ones.

    • Henry G says:

Oh yeah drop the knowledge. Thanks for sharing.

  • Ashley Jones says:

    • Rachel Gerrard says:

Ashley, please do some research before feeing your growing child this unhealthy diet.

    • AloNeTime_OMG Ezlol says:

Rachel Gerrard seems like you are the only unhealthy one judging by your comment.. Very unhappy too I reckon.. Why don’t you just leave people to live their own lives..the need to but in on others ways of living would suggest you’re not convenient about how you’re living your own life

    • Rachel Gerrard says:

Yeah, I’m really unhappy and unhealthy.

  • Creative Ethos Music says:

You are honestly golden ⭐️, keep blessing the universe with your amazing videos. You promote positivity and a healthy lifestyle without shoving it down peoples throats and I know everyone of your followers appreciate it. Unlike most fitness channels your don’t feed off people’s insecurities and try to make a business out of it, you just do what you do to put a smile on peoples face and help everyone vibrate higher. Thank you Simnett 🙏🏽 for being one of the most authentic YouTubers in a community of fake ones

  • Pedro Venturott says:

Hey Derek! Have you tried putting one or two small frozen pieces of beets into your smoothies? We don’t have berries here in Brazil, so I put those and it makes my smoothies taste amazing. Also, it gives that nice purple color! Keep up the good videos man, you definitely inspired me on my vegan journey!

Great video man. Just started to change my diet and working on a clean meal plan. This gave me some new inspiration to give my meals a twist. Love how you use Miso to put it on toast. Never thought of that. Looking forward to check it out.

It’s videos like these I share to explain to people how you’re able to get your protein intake on a plant-based diet! Thank you very much for this!

  • JetAI Trader says:

I love the tumeric and pepper combo idea. I’m going to add that to my meals! I also use the flax meal which has good omega-3 content. I also use chia seeds. I now add tomato sauce with some avocado to my black beans and brown rice foundation. The tomato sauce has lycopenes. You do NOT get lycopenes from uncooked tomatoes! Lycopenes are one of the strongest free radical molecule scavengers. Free radical molecules wreak havoc by altering all kinds of cellular molecules including DNA. Studies have shown reduced risk for cancer with higher lycopene absorption. However, lycopenes are fat soluble and need some fat to allow for adequate absorption, thus the avocado. Add some high ranked ANDI score vegetables and you have a great meal.

Thank you so much for posting and the nutritional ideas. As a vegetarian here, I’m pulling away from the vegan processed food stuff slowly I’ve been watching Christopher Walker’s content as well here on the youtube. Learning much about testosterone and hormonal balances from him. Your exercise routine is truly amazing. Much success to you!

Thank you for the inspirations! I’ve been an inconsistent vegan for several years… working my way back. Recently went to a stock show with friends and my heart sank. Felt like an animal slave auction. I really appreciate the positive support to make a successful transition. Also I LOVE Coco’s cameos!

  • Dee's Vlogss says:

Hey man. I have recently decided to go plant base with my eating. As I am weighing at 177kgs. Your videos on food gives me a great idea on what to have. And it looks really filling too.

Over here in nz. We call both on them sweet potato they are just different types. Yams to us are totally different although we don’t eat yams here in nz. It’s more popular in Tonga and Samoa.
