Why Keto No Longer Works

This is what a keto diet did for my husband back in 2017 – In less than nine months, he lost 81 pounds. Keto worked. In fact, his story was one that was echoed by many back then. Rapid weight loss with inflammatory markers and HbA1c measurements dropping from dangerously high to ideal in a matter of months. Keto success stories are still there but less common nowadays. Did keto suddenly stop working? Did our bodies catch on and say, "wait a minute, you can’t do that anymore."

In this video, we’ll examine what happened to keto and how you can cut through the distractions to recapture the advantage.

Excellent video, and a much needed dose of reality. Thanks for helping to get us back on track!

  • @michaelsallee7534 says:

just placing KETO to a name does not make it KETO

    • @unabarry2476 says:

      What exactly do you mean???

    • @andy2417 says:

So true. I called my diet Keto. The reality is that my tolerance for carbs is lower than I thought. In order to get into true ketosis I probably would have to consume close to no carbs or less than 15 grams a day for sure (according to keto urine stix).

    • @lacirae684 says:

@@unabarry2476keto foods can still knock You out of ketosis if You exceed the portion size. but getting knocked out every once in a while isn’t a real big deal because You likely didn’t get knocked out too far, since it was still in the low carb range (versus eating too many non keto foods & getting knocked out of the park for much longer). the problem is when You continually eat slightly too many “keto carbs”, perpetually keeping You just slightly out of reach of ketosis.

    • @LauraB.335 says:

@@unabarry2476- some people think of keto as a list of foods when it is actually a metabolic state, and depending on how many carbs you eat, how often you eat, and how metabolically unhealthy you are to begin with, it can take a while to experience ketosis, even when you’re supposedly eating a keto diet.

Also, for some who have gone carnivore, for example, they struggle to ever get into ketosis for whatever reason (too little fat, too much protein, too much dairy) and have to either change some things or go back to more of a ketovore or ketogenic way of eating. Plus, with a ketogenic diet, of course big food has to get involved and create all sorts of products labeled “keto” that can often keep people out of ketosis due to fake sugars, etc.

Bottom line, when people are trying the ketogenic “diet,” they want to get in ketosis and stay there consistently.

From what I’ve seen as far as comments on videos when people say they tried keto and it didn’t work, it’s one of three things:
      1) they didn’t try it long enough to really get the benefits of being in ketosis or to even get into ketosis consistently at all; 2) they were never in ketosis consistently, so similar to 1, but for various other reasons; and 3) they are vegans who are trying to make disparaging remarks about eating meat while looking as tho that’s not what they’re doing.

  • @JeJe11 says:

Awesome information with references. Watered down ANYTHING looses it’s effectiveness. I turned gluten-free before it was popular (reversed the beginnings of joint, skin, memory issues in the process!) … but then Big Food jumped on the bandwagon, and, not knowing the consequences, I replaced the foods I eliminated with the GF alternatives. The health problems soon returned, and intensified. The same has happened with Keto. Run far from substitutes! Thank you, Dr. Becky!

  • @ranger2316 says:

A great video at just the right time! The issue with diets in general is can you stick with them… or at least follow them closely enough to sustain your weight loss. Temptations abound! I’m looking forward to the possibility of Team Gillaspy getting back together again!

  • @samanthabloggins1775 says:

I wish more people would realize that net carbs and total carbs are not the same and that you need to look at total carbs!!
    Thankyou Dr

    • @unabarry2476 says:

Depends which country you live in. Calculation in England and the EU are very different to USA.

    • @samanthabloggins1775 says:

@unabarry2476  how so? Here in Canada they subtract the fiber from the total to get the net, you still have the same carbs fiber or no fiber.

  • @tubecoatue says:

Excellent talk Dr.Becky. Nice to hear we’ll see Keith back soon too. Keto works but the truth is that it’s hard long-term. I’ve been on since 2017 but I have to confess, it’s not been without falling off the wagon on a regular basis. I always claw my way back into ketosis but it;s a struggle. What I consider to be one of the early lies about keto is that “your cravings will go away.” This is not true; at least for me. What I have to keep reminding myself is that it’s not just about weight loss, its reducing an A!C in the 11s down to a 4.9 measured just last week. It’s about saving your life, but nobody should be mislead; KETO works, and is worth it, but it’s hard.

    • @raquelnewby6580 says:

I agree with you that Keto is hard. I have done keto a couple of times, had great results, and now I weigh more than ever because I just couldn’t keep it going long term, and I also can’t convince myself to go back on keto again because of the foods I need to cut to do so. I know that if I cut more sugar out of my diet and allow a little bit of carbs that I can do it, but sugar is hard to stop consuming for me.

    • @plantagenant says:

There are carb cycling diets that bodybuilders used that use Keto adaptation then using say 1-2 days on a “normal” high carb diet. It’s based around the idea of hormone manipulation. One of the proponents was Dr Mauro Pasquale’s “Anabolic diet”. It means 5 days low carb 1-2 days higher carb. It breaks the monotony of a low carb diet and seems to work for many who tried it.

    • @seanfrank4158 says:

@@raquelnewby6580 You’re certainly not alone. I think we all realize the addictive properties of highly processed foods laden with sugar. That’s the way I frame it any way. It’s a struggle for sure.

    • @raquelnewby6580 says:

@@plantagenantthanks for the tip. Low carb does get monotonous for me very quickly. That might not be a bad idea to do some days lower carb and allow more carb on other days. I think it’s the texture of carbs that help pull a meal together for me, so having meals with and without it to cycle through could help me a lot.

  • @monty-365 says:

Thank you👍🏽I’ve been doing keto/low carb on and off for years…I can say for sure that eating more whole foods, rather than the highly processed and fast foods regimen…I feel soo much better! The moment I go nuts with the social eating protocol , I feel like pure crap, I have more hot flashes, my vision gets more blurry, my face is more puffy and I have more body aches. I’m 62 and i don’t want to accept that getting older automatically means your health should automatically decline…we’ve been fed that crock of crap for centuries. What we eat, what are lifestyle is like, plays a huge factor in how we age and the ailments and/or diseases we encounter on our life’s journey. I’m not saying living the best lifestyle and eating the more wholesome of foods keeps us from dealing with the woes of ailments and diseases, but I know that providing our bodies with the correct nutrients rich foods and supplements help a hell of a lot.

  • @maryhumphrey2236 says:

I miss seeing Keith, and I am looking foreward to the announcement. I started keto six to seven years ago. While I have lost a lot of weight, and I am no longer on insulin or any type 2 diabetes meds, I have had to crack down more so, to much less than 20 total carbs per day. At 65 years old, I assume my body is still healing, so I adjust my diet when needed. In all these years, I have only (slightly) cheated once or twice. Currently, I am cutting out all artificial sweeteners (specifically diet soda). I always say that our bodies are different…what works for someone else might not work for me, and vice versa. I appreciate your work, Becky!

    • @debiwillis9045 says:

That’s why you are struggling…you never adapted your body to higher protein and carbs…the big black keto secret they never bothered to tell anyone until the last 2 years

  • @rthib1960 says:

What you say has the ring of truth. I lost 65 lbs 7 years ago doing strict keto and gradually have gained about 1/2 of it back. Back on keto but am addicted to keto breads, some of which claim zero carbs. I lost 10 of the 30 I had regained but have been in a stall for 2 months. Something tells me I need to say bye bye to bread once again. I need a good cry now! 😭

    • @graspingoil says:

That’s what I’ve been telling myself, “The boundaries used to be clear…..”

    • @bartmcdonald1251 says:

have you listened to dr boz? she has a different approach to keto. one main thing is eat your meals in a 16:8 or whatever but start in the am, since the morning bg spike is going to happen anyway. she advocates fasting and making sure you are making and using ketones, since that helps get you to autophagy. might get some ideas on the stall and keep your bread ;-]

    • @alisonpatterson3770 says:

I love the recipe from Diet Doctor for Seed Crackers. I really recommend trying them. And they are very easy to make. I make a batch and put them in the freezer and pull them out when I want a cracker/bread substitute.

    • @pamelar4782 says:

I too tried keto bread and the weight started going up. We have to use our knowledge and not believe what we are being sold.

  • @KF-tk5wb says:

I’ve been on low carb/keto-ish for almost a year: went from 135 to 115. I started to add in some carbs deliberately because I was losing too much weight. I stay about 117 now but when my weight goes up a pound or two, I cut back on carbs. My last meal of the day is a small one at 4P. Thank you so much Dr. Becky for your information and encouragement. I am in my 70s and feel great. I feel in control which I did not have before.

    • @101life9 says:

Same here. Did it for 5+ yrs. Lost too much weight due to insufficient calories. I don’t have big appetite to begin with. No more strict keto for me. Keto did help me to lower A1C from 5.9 to 4.9. However, I maintain no snacking, low carb and no sugar…

I’m 65 and used Keto to lose 80 lbs. I feel so much better, it is wonderful!! I cycle out of keto every now and then (for a few days during the holidays) but I stay low carb and reduce my fat intake during the time off keto. I do maintain two meals per day all of the time. My weight will fluctuate about 5 lbs or so, but for me that’s not a big deal. Keto works if you do it right.

  • @BobbyFromNJ says:

I guess I’m proud of myself for anticipating what you were going to say as soon as I saw the title of this video. As soon as the food industry got ahold of the “KETO” branding, “consumers” were doomed to failure.

  • @susanv9660 says:

Glad you brought up the studies on LDL. My doctors have been insistent for years that my LDL of 175-200 must be treated with a statin. I am not diabetic and my other blood values are normal. I gave in once and tried rosuvastatin. I got terrible diarrhea which stopped when I discontinued the drug. The doctor still advised to try a different statin. I’m not going to. Refusing a statin makes me feel like I am just non compliant but I have been following the studies as well.

  • @gwenj5419 says:

The same thing happens with every diet. The processed food companies find a way to still sell us junk foods. Low fat became Snackwells. Atkins became Atkins candies and snack bars and Keto became Keto shakes and cookies.

  • @hookedonwood5830 says:

3 years mainly keto. few periods where I allow carps in – but mainly Keto. Lost 15Kg but main reason besides weight loss was to do intermittent fasting to see the effect on an autoimmune disorder. I have had no real relapses for the 3 years and my blood work has improved. Being running on ketone’s make the fasting so much easier 🙂 And taking out all refined carps (or carps in general) has probably also helped. I have started to add in very small amounts of fruit (½ apple on some days and a few berries) but I have no craving for sweets any-more at all. I do a “healthy” keto with clean cuts of meet (mainly organic), lots of leafy greens, eggs, some cold cuts and cruciferous veggies – actually like the stuff.

@MrLukearthwalker The “fad” is millions of years old. Throughout that time, we ate a long list of animals into extinction. Man, I bet giant bison was tasty!

    • @glacey4906 says:

@@InsolentVillagerI take it then that you eat as much of an animal as possible? Not just muscle meat but organ meat, offal as they did way back then. They also supplemented their diets by foraging for fresh greens in spring, fruits and other vegetation where possible otherwise they became sick.
