Easy Black Bean Tofu (Soy Free & High Protein)

Here is a soy free tofu alternative that you can make at home yourself! It's really easy, high in protein, super cheap to make and you can season it however you would like!

Let me know in the comments if this is something you would try?

Black Bean Tofu

1 cup of dry black beans
2 cups of water
1 tsp of onion powder
0.5 tsp of salt
0.5 tsp of pepper

Soak 1 Cup of black beans overnight for at least 10 hours
Strain and rinse
This should give you about 2 cups of soaked black beans
Add to a blender with 2 cups of water and blend until smooth
*If your blender is not strong enough, try a food processor and only add about 1/4 of the water to begin with
Strain through a strainer and add seasoning
Add to a pot and heat on medium until it starts to bubble and thicken, whisking it consistently
Turn down the heat to a low simmer and continue cooking until it is very thick. 12-15 minutes total.
Quickly add it to a glass baking dish and smooth it into the edges.
Let it cool then pop it in the fridge.
It should set up in the fridge in about 1-2 hours
Now cook with it however you would usually use tofu.

  • Dragon Fly says:

WOW. This look amazing! Can you do that with canned black beans, too?
Thank you for this awesome recipe and have a great weekend!

    • Simnett Nutrition says:

I don’t think it works with canned or cooked beans but I haven’t tried it that way before.

    • Dragon Fly says:

@Simnett Nutrition Thanks so much for your reply! I’m going to buy the dry black beans on my next grocery haul and then try it with the canned beans too. Will report back on how the experiment went! At the worst, I have at least one good batch! πŸ˜‰

    • Jason Simpson says:

I assume it would work, but precooked have a lot more water, so I’d blend it up, then put it in some cheesecloth for awhile, just to get out the extra water, otherwise it’s not going to firm up.

    • Julie Holmes says:

It’s the starches from the beans that solidify the mixture. Cooked and canned beans have had the starches removed in the cooking process. So no, it won’t work with canned/pre-cooked beans – unless you add a starch.

  • Beaux animaux says:

This takes black beans to a whole new level! πŸ”₯ πŸ–€

  • Ma Dam Plant says:

Great! I made your red lentil tofu. It was fantastic ❀

  • Zepzour says:

I might have to try this. I love me some soy but I probably need to diversify my proteins a bit more. That black color is gorgeous

  • Joal Harding says:

Awesome, thanks! Going to make it now with some black beluga lentils.πŸŽ‰

  • Steamy Vegan says:

Looks delicious. Will totally have to try this out. Thanks!

  • kiwifeijoa says:

This looks delicious! Great that you put the flavouring inside the tofu. Seaweed flavour would be nice too. Definitely going to try this one..

    • Simnett Nutrition says:

Yes that would definitely give it a nice flavour, plus you can marinade it too, just like tofu so the flavour combos are endless!

  • fromtheheart says:

What a clever idea! I’m definitely going to try this

  • Lisa Kirkby says:

Thank you so much for this recipe! I can’t eat soy, so I greatly appreciate this. Also, I must’ve missed your video about doing the same thing with chickpeas, so I’ll have to go search for that one and give it a try as well. Thank you so much for these recipes Derek!!!

  • Malia Paws says:

Omg thank you for testing this!! I had the exact same thought to try with black beans but I was nervous that the black beans would be too tough to blend for tofu.

Gonna make me some smoky chipotle and garlic black bean tofu for some sweet potato taco bowls πŸŽ‰πŸ˜Š

    Thanks again!

  • Mandy M says:

Yum! First time I’ve seen this done with black beans – looks delicious! πŸ˜‹
