Is FDA-Approved Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy Safe?

As of 2019, there are urine-free FDA-approved bioidentical hormones that skirt the standardization concerns of compounded preparations. Are they any safer?

I recently produced a bunch of videos on menopause symptoms. Check out:

HRT saved my life. I had a psychotic break when my ovaries naturally failed at menopause. I lost everything, and nearly my life. I was treated as a psychiatric patient until finally I was given an estrogen patch. Within 48 hours I had my mental health back. Since then I have gone back to school and have done 2 clinical residencies, earned a masters degree and my health is better then my sisters who did not opt for hormones. I am a believer.

    Thank you!

    Finally, thanks doc!

I am so disappointed that this channel is treating menopause as just hot flashes. Your research is not up to date if you are still using that old, flawed study as your guide.

    • @estinhewart says:

Hot flashes are the most common symptom of the condition known as menopause right? Please correct me if not because I want to know

    • @shellym79 says:

That’s not really what he did tho. The video wasn’t about menopause it was about hrt safety. And even that it’s obviously just a piece to give people a nudge to look into it themselves.

    • @ErinPDX says:

Some people experience hot flashes. Some experience racing heart, or surges of adrenaline. Some it’s insomnia. I was “uncomfortable in my skin.” (Or mood swings) And the tiniest amount of estradiol removed that symptom immediately!
I agree that I do wish he mentioned more symptoms, and that HRT can help with perimenopause. Menopause is 12 months AFTER your last period. Who knows when that happens until literally a year later!?!

    • @ErinPDX says:

@@estinhewartI didn’t reply to your comment directly, but I hope my reply helps.

  • @allencrider says:

Well that does it! I’m joining the North American Menopause Society.

  • @williamcooper8559 says:

Are hot flashes the main symptom women are concerned with? Would women benefit from a video focused on menopause and its effect on mental health? What about the physical effects like loss in bone density and muscle mass? Is there no argument in favour of HRT or is the risk to reward ratio just too hight?

  • @ana-pi6ut says:

What about HRT for heart and brain health?

During menopause, all internal temperature sense is disrupted. Drinking cold water gives you shivers almost instantly.

Hot flashes are not just uncomfortable. I could never tell whether I had a fever without a thermometer. At 25, I could tell you my temperature to the closest 0.2 degree without one.

  • @crystaldurham-austin8470 says:

Hot flashes is not the only symptom for menopause. I don’t have hot flashes, yet vaginal atrophy, itching, hair loss are things I experience right now with menopause. Where are the studies about the whole picture?

  • @TonyNovation says:

@0:35 If you’re skeptical, try crushing it a pill and sniffing it.

I’ve been watching a long time. I appreciate the humor but I’m afraid that language should NOT be in this video.

  • @shellym79 says:

This video isn’t about menopause or hot flashes. That is why he didn’t go into all menopause symptoms. His response about hot flashes was just to the response about drinking cool water specifically. This video is about hrt safety. It’s clearly just a snippet of information otherwise it would be 3 hours long. He’s giving people information so they can do more research themselves and discuss the best options for them with their doctor.

  • @ginac2772 says:

I’m way past symptoms of menopause, but am very interested in learning about BHRT for improving bone density.

  • @kgold5962 says:

BHR was a lifesaver for me. I was on them for 5 years and it got me through menopause and my quality of life improved dramatically. I was a basket case before I got on them. Mentally and physically. I used the Wiley Protocol which are creams applied to the skin and the system is made to mimic your natural hormone fluctuations over the month. So not static dosing. I’m on a plant based diet and I exercise and manage my weight. So I am a health conscious person. But while some people can sail through menopause for others it’s a nightmare. Drinking cold water during a hot flash is not sufficient for managing the many symptoms you can have. I am thankful that I had an option.

  • @phatmonkey11 says:

Yeah ladies! Just have a cold drink! Keep a frozen margarita by your bed, lol! Hot flashes cured!!!! 🤣🤣🤣

  • @UTBanjo says:

How about for women who have had their ovaries removed therapeutically?

  • @kgold5962 says:

I just researched naturopaths in my area. I used Dr Fred Bloem in the DC area.

  • @JenniferCarter-p8l says:

Unfortunately the US kind of behind the times on HRT and the treatment of menopause. It is true that bioidentical HRT can be problematic because it is made in compounding pharmacies and the dosage of hormones can be wildly inaccurate to waht was proscribed as testing has shown. However body identical transdermal HRT in the form of patches and gels which is the European gold standard treatment for peri and menopausal women is actually associated with lower risks of heart disease, high blood pressure and metabolic disease and certain cancers. Women on estrogen only hrt have less incidence of breast cancer than women who do not take HRT and the increased risk of breast cancer which is associated with progesterone use for 5 + years has not been shown to occur with micronised progesterone as of yet. Indeed even in those women who get breast cancer women who were on HRT have better outcomes that women who never took HRT. HRT is also showing in more recent studies to protect against dementia and osteoperosis, two of the biggest killers of women. Its sad to see such a respected doctor give such outdated information that potentially misleads women.
