Vo2 max and mortality isn’t the same as VO2 max and longevity for those in the upper quintiles where little difference is shown

    • @jb_1971 says:

Longevity is determined by mortality over a lifetime, not just by mortality at any given point. Something can lower your mortality now but raise it in 10 years and vice versa.

  • @OTISWDRIFTWOOD says:

Association bla bla bla. Worthless as a cause

    • @GiladThe1st says:

The link for smoking and mortality risk is also established through association

    • @viktorgoa says:

EXACTLY! “Randomized trial with huge errors” lol, while Peter is still selling AG1, you know the supplement founded by a scam artist who once even said, we should eat dirt. True story

  • @gaurd3 says:

Not sure but it can’t hurt. Primarily focusing on retaining muscle. Never skip leg day! Got to watch that back and no ego lifting

  • @andreiasofiei5309 says:

    Good vid as always!
What is your insight on the role of the EEA’s in relation to longevity? A lot of contradictory data out there.

  • @Nof1LongevityQuest says:

    I’m a 56yo female with a VO2 Max of 52. I must be doing a few things right. I’ve been running since 2011.

Awesome you did a video on this, yet there are still some things about that specific study that stands out. As you mentioned, the categories for extremely fit vs very unfit is scewed towards the low end. The 300 percent is misleading imo as the people in the lowest categories have such a low VO2 max that they almost can’t function and almost certaintly have disabilites/major health issues. When I read the study, despite their sensitivity analysis, it reads like VO2max here is mostly a proxy for other health markers.

The explanation that VO2 max is a good indicator of general physical activity also hints that something is off, as almost all other meta-analysis only show 20-50 percent decreased risk of mortality in highest versus lowest quantile of exercise/physical activity groups. Lastly, the fact that the study found that smoking vs non-smoking only increased risk of mortality by 40 percent signals, to me at least, that something is off with the analysis. As you said, smoking is consistently associated with a 100-300 increase in most meta analysis even after adjustment.

Not saying that increasing your VO2max doesn’t reduce your risk of mortality, I’m sure it does, but something is definitely off with that study.

Peter is one of the most intelligent guy in the field of health and longevity. He is unique in his field

  • @scottk1525 says:

I think Attia is making almost the exact same mistake with V02 max as people who think increasing grip strength will improve life expectancy.

  • @viktorgoa says:

It is all speculation from Peter’s side, he’s a great salesman looking for clout and followers, these longevity experts and doctors are associating without knowing if there is causation. There are no studies that have followed people in their whole lives, with exact same diet, exact same lifestyle, gender, sex, etc and the only difference being the exercise. These papers are barely scientific, only stating what they think, not what exactly happens. That’s why nutrition and exercise are all speculations. However you can look at what the proper human diet is, and clearly see that we have been hyper carnivores, who are not built for cardio, but shorter intense activities. Hence you can get all of the nutrients you need from muscle meat alone.

Peter is Not right about a lot of things.

  • @okrimiksnajleb9635 says:

Vo2 max drop very fast once you stopped trainning

  • @okrimiksnajleb9635 says:

a part of the association with mortality and VO2 max is reverse causality but evn the last studies don’t meseasures it precisely

  • @pagestreetvideos says:

I had mine tested at UCSF last year and it was 63, my garmin was saying 74+. I’m 60, but my BMI is just 17.5 to 18. Getting a high Vo2Max is not easy, especially as you increase your weight. I agree on the sweating, and I lose 1 to 2 pounds an hour doing exercises. I agree on working the body, heart, brain, and mind equally, so it gets complicated.
